
Gift Cards FAQ: Answers to Common Questions About Digital Gift Cards
Gift cards can only be sold as unique digital codes through your online store, with their value subtracted from order totals including taxes and shipping. The codes never expire and can't be customized.
Key features and limitations:
- Digital-only (no physical cards available)
- Value applies to entire order including taxes and shipping
- Can't be used for subscription products
- Multiple gift cards can be used per order
- No expiration date
- No custom code creation possible
- Site-specific (can't be used across different websites)
- Can't be topped up after purchase
Purchasing and redemption:
- Customers go directly to checkout when buying
- No custom forms or fields allowed
- Can't combine with other products in same purchase
- Sales pricing and discount codes don't apply to gift card purchases
- Recipients receive code via email
Balance and refunds:
- Full value is always applied at checkout
- Remaining balance visible after code entry
- Unused cards can be refunded
- Partially used cards can't be refunded
- Refunded purchases return value to card balance
Additional notes:
- Can't be used or sold through point of sale
- Lost codes can be resent from Orders panel
- Currency can't be changed after selling gift cards
- Cards remain valid if site expires temporarily
- Not transferable from other eCommerce platforms
Customer options:
- Can split payment between gift card and credit card
- Can use multiple gift cards per order
- Can't schedule delivery time of gift card email
- Can check balance at checkout or in original email
Store management:
- Cards can be unlisted or deleted to stop sales
- Refund unused balances before downgrading from Commerce plan
- Gift card tax applies to final purchase, not card purchase
