How to Cancel a Domain Transfer: Step-by-Step Guide
You can cancel an incoming domain transfer to Squarespace while it's still in "Transfer pending" status. Here's how to handle domain transfer cancellation:
Cancellation Requirements
- Domain must still be in "Transfer pending" status
- Domain provider must not have approved the transfer yet
- Domain must not have been released by the current provider
To Cancel a Domain Transfer:
- Go to Domains panel
- Select the pending transfer domain
- Click "..." (more options)
- Choose "Cancel transfer"
- Confirm the cancellation
Important Notes:
- Contact your domain provider to ensure they also deny the transfer
- Once a domain provider releases the domain, cancellation is no longer possible
- After a successful transfer, domains must stay with the new host for 60 days
If Cancellation Fails:
- Verify transfer status with your current provider
- If domain was already released, wait for transfer completion
- After transfer completes, you can initiate a new transfer away from Squarespace
Best Practice: Cancel the transfer in both places:
- Squarespace Domains panel
- Original domain provider's system
This ensures the domain remains with your current provider and prevents any transfer conflicts.
Remember: Acting quickly is essential, as the window for cancellation is limited to the pending transfer period.
