How to Connect a Third-Party Subdomain to Squarespace: Step-by-Step Guide
To connect a third-party subdomain to your Squarespace site, follow these essential steps:
Before Starting:
- Ensure you have a registered domain with full DNS services
- Set up your subdomain with your provider first
- Note: You don't need to connect the main domain before connecting a subdomain
Step-by-Step Connection Process:
- Start in Squarespace
- Go to Domains panel
- Click "Use a domain you own"
- Enter your subdomain name
- Click "Connect with provider"
- Select "Other" from the dropdown
- Click "Connect domain" and accept the prompt
- Keep the DNS Settings panel open for reference
- Configure DNS Records First CNAME Record:
- Host: [verification code].subdomain
- Type: CNAME
- Points to: verify.squarespace.com
Second CNAME Record:
- Host: your subdomain
- Type: CNAME
- Points to: ext-cust.squarespace.com
- Complete Setup
- Return to Squarespace DNS Settings
- Click "Update Records"
- Wait 24-72 hours for changes to take effect
- If using as primary domain, uncheck "Use www prefix" option
Troubleshooting Tips:
- If CNAME records aren't supported, use TXT records instead
- Remove any conflicting A records
- Verify DNS settings using the DNS verification tool
- Connection issues will show "Cannot verify domain ownership" message
Alternative Method (If CNAME Not Supported): Use TXT records with the same values:
- First record: Follow domain verification with TXT record
- Second record: Use same values as CNAME but select TXT type
Note: The process may take up to 72 hours to complete. Check the Domains panel to monitor progress.
