How to Set Up Custom Domain Email on Squarespace: Keep or Switch Provider
Email addresses can be created using your custom domain (e.g., [email protected]). When using a custom domain with Squarespace, you have two options for email management:
Continue with Current Email Provider
- No disruption to existing email service
- Requires only CNAME and A record changes
- Works with both third-party and Squarespace domains
- Maintain existing MX records and name servers
- Add necessary DNS records through domain settings
Switch to Google Workspace
Before Starting:
- Ensure you have a custom domain set up
- Complete any domain transfers first
- Keep existing email service active during transition
- Maintain access to both email and Squarespace admin
Migration Process:
- Create Google Workspace Account
- Set up through Squarespace
- Use existing domain to keep current email address
- Add all necessary user email addresses
- Allow up to 72 hours for MX record changes to propagate
- Transfer Content
- Migrate emails, contacts, and other data
- Check if provider offers transfer assistance
- Use Google's data migration services
- Verify all content is accessible in new account
- Cancel Previous Service Requirements:
- Complete setup verified
- Receiving emails successfully
- All content saved from old account
For Squarespace Domains:
- Remove old MX records
- Keep Google Workspace MX records
For Third-Party Domains:
- Maintain Google Workspace MX records
- Cancel only email service
- Keep domain service active
After completion, all new emails will route to Google Workspace, with billing managed through Squarespace while maintaining access to Gmail, Calendar, and Drive services.
