How to Use Nameserver Registration and Glue Records for Domain Management
Glue records allow you to host your domain on your own servers by mapping your nameserver's IP address to the TLD registry. This is useful when you want to manage your domain's DNS independently of your domain registrar.
When to Use Glue Records:
- You have your own server infrastructure
- You possess server management experience
- You want to host your domain on non-registrar servers (e.g., Cloudflare)
Adding Glue Records:
- Gather your server's hostname and IP address
- Access your domain control panel
- Navigate to DNS > Nameserver Registration
- Click "Add Hosting Record"
- Enter the hostname and IP address
- Save changes
Note: Changes may take 24-48 hours to propagate across the internet.
Removing Glue Records:
- Ensure nameservers point to alternative targets first
- Access your domain control panel
- Navigate to DNS > Domain Nameservers
- Click Nameserver Registration
- Delete the hostname record using the trash icon
- Save changes
Important: Never delete glue records while they're in use. Removal can cause website downtime for up to 48 hours.
Best Practices:
- Keep hostname and IP address information readily available
- Plan nameserver changes during low-traffic periods
- Always have backup DNS configuration ready
- Allow sufficient time for DNS propagation
- Test DNS resolution before and after changes
Consider consulting with your hosting provider or DNS administrator before making significant changes to your domain's nameserver configuration.
