Test Your Checkout Process: A Step-by-Step Guide to Order Testing in Squarespace
Test orders provide a way to preview your shop's checkout process and verify functionality. Here's how to conduct them effectively:
Option 1: Place Real Order and Refund (Recommended)
- Place the order:
- Add items to cart
- Complete checkout with real payment details
- Receive confirmation email
- Process refund:
- Go to Finance > Orders
- Locate your order (marked as "Pending")
- Click "..." > "Cancel Order" to refund
Note: You'll get full refund for items and transaction fees, but payment processing fees are typically non-refundable.
Option 2: Test Mode (Advanced)
- Enable test mode:
- Go to Settings
- Toggle "Test Mode" on
- Place test order:
- Add items to cart
- Use test card: 4242 4242 4242 4242
- Enter future expiration date
- Use any 3 digits for CVC
- Review and cleanup:
- Delete test orders from Finance > Orders
- Disable test mode when finished
Important Considerations:
- Test orders deplete inventory
- Order numbers cannot be reset
- Analytics count refunded orders in totals
- Cancel any test subscription orders
- Remember to disable test mode before accepting real orders
Payment Processing Notes:
- Squarespace Payments: Full refund minus processing fee
- PayPal: Full refund minus fixed transaction fee
- Stripe: Full refund minus transaction fees

- Connected payment processor
- Public site availability
- Enabled checkout on domain
For Gift Cards: Enable test mode, purchase a test gift card, and use it for test purchases. Delete test orders and disable test mode when finished.
