Domain Management Options: Transfer vs Connect

When using a third-party domain (from providers like GoDaddy or Hover) with Squarespace, you have two options: transferring or connecting. Transferring is recommended for simplified management through a single service.

Transferring Your Domain

Benefits:

  • Centralized management of domain and website
  • Free SSL certificate
  • Free WHOIS protection
  • Complimentary year of domain registration with annual plan purchase

Requirements:

  • Domain extension must be on Squarespace's supported list
  • No premium domains
  • Domain age must be 60+ days
  • Registration period under 9 years

Note: Former Google Domains customers are already transferred to Squarespace and require no further action.

Connecting Your Domain

This option (also called domain mapping) keeps your domain with the current provider while pointing it to Squarespace.

Key Considerations:

  • DNS settings managed through original provider
  • Requires managing two separate services
  • Provider must allow full DNS settings access
  • Support limitations for provider-specific issues

Making Your Choice

Transfer if:

  • Your domain meets all transfer requirements
  • You prefer consolidated management
  • You want access to all features through Squarespace

Connect if:

  • Your domain doesn't meet transfer requirements
  • You have complex registration setup
  • Transfer isn't currently possible

Remember: You can always transfer a connected domain later if it meets the requirements.

Both options allow you to use your domain with Squarespace, but transferring offers more streamlined management and additional benefits when available.
