DNS records won't save or work properly? Here's a comprehensive troubleshooting guide to help you resolve common DNS record issues.

Replace Placeholder Values

  • When adding custom records, replace gray placeholder text in Host and Data fields
  • Priority field is optional
  • Use actual values instead of example data

Host Field Format Guidelines

  • Your domain name automatically appends after Host values
  • For mail.yourdomain.com, only enter "mail"
  • Use @ in Host field when provider requests bare domain (yourdomain.com)
  • Avoid duplicate Host fields across different record types

Common Error Messages and Solutions

Invalid IP Address or Host Name:

  • Check Data field format
  • Remove trailing periods
  • Verify information accuracy

Conflicting Records:

  1. Open domains dashboard
  2. Select domain name
  3. Navigate to DNS Settings
  4. Review Custom Records
  5. Delete conflicting records
  6. Add new record
  7. Save changes

Priority Field Issues

  • Only editable for MX or SRV records
  • Not modifiable for other record types

AAAA Record Formatting

  • Use fully expanded IPv6 addresses
  • Example:
    • Incorrect: 2620:12a:8000::3
    • Correct: 2620:12a:8000:0:0:0:0:3

Long TXT/DMARC Records

  • 255-character limit per record
  • Split longer records into multiple strings
  • Use online DNS record splitter tools
  • Add each string separately

Important Notes

  • DNS changes take 24-72 hours to propagate
  • Contact your service provider for specific DNS requirements
  • Use the Squarespace Forum for peer support

Remember: DNS configuration requires precise formatting and patience during propagation. Always verify information from your service provider before making changes.
