Domain transfers and domain linking serve different purposes when using an external domain with Squarespace. Here's what you need to know about each option.

Domain Transfer (Recommended)

When you transfer your domain to Squarespace, you'll manage both your domain and website in one place. This option offers several benefits:

  • Centralized DNS and billing management
  • Free SSL certificates
  • Free Whois privacy
  • Complimentary one-year domain service with annual plans

Transfer Requirements:

  • Domain TLD must be on Squarespace's supported list
  • No premium registered domains
  • Domain must be registered for at least 60 days
  • Registration must have less than 9 years remaining

Domain Linking (Alternative Option)

Domain linking, also called domain mapping, keeps your domain with the current provider while pointing it to Squarespace. Consider this option if you can't transfer your domain.

Key Considerations for Linking:

  • DNS settings remain with your original provider
  • Requires configuration through two companies
  • Need full access to DNS settings from provider
  • Limited support for provider-specific issues

Making Your Decision

Choose transfer if:

  • Your domain meets Squarespace's transfer requirements
  • You want simplified management
  • You prefer consolidated billing

Choose linking if:

  • Your domain doesn't meet transfer requirements
  • You have complex registration setup
  • You need to maintain your current provider

Note: If you have a Google Domains account, your domain has already been transferred to Squarespace, and no additional action is required.

Remember that linked domains can be transferred to Squarespace later if they meet the requirements. Both options will allow your domain to work with your Squarespace site effectively.
