How to Find and Change Your Squarespace Predefined Domain Name
Predefined domain names are automatically generated URLs for Squarespace sites, following the format yourwebsiteid.squarespace.com. The site ID consists of two random words and sometimes additional characters.
When logged in, you'll see this predefined domain in your browser's address bar, even if you have a custom domain. While visitors using your custom domain will see that instead, your predefined domain remains visible in the login screen and source code.
Key differences between domain types:
- Predefined domain: Automatic .squarespace.com URL assigned to your site
- Custom domain: Your chosen address (e.g., yourdomain.com) that displays to visitors
To find your predefined domain name, copy the URL from your browser's address bar up to "/config" while logged into your site.
Guidelines for changing your predefined domain:
- Length: 3-30 characters
- Allowed characters: Letters, numbers, and hyphens (no special characters)
- Must start with a letter
- Cannot end with a hyphen
- Not available for parked domain pages or Acuity Scheduling subscriptions
To modify your predefined domain:
- Access the Domain Names panel
- Click on your current predefined domain name
- Enter a new Site ID
- Click Save
You'll receive a confirmation email titled "Update your Squarespace URL" after the change is complete. If the desired Site ID is already in use, you'll need to choose another or contact support to reuse a domain from your deleted sites.
Note: Shorter domain names are generally easier to remember and share.
