
How to Update Domain Contact Information and Manage Whois Settings
Contact information for domains can be split into essential roles and formatting requirements.
Contact Roles:
- Owner: Primary contact and official domain registrant who receives all domain-related emails
- Admin: Secondary contact who receives most domain emails but doesn't own the domain
- Tech: Backup contact who receives only critical domain emails
- Billing: Additional backup who receives critical emails (not listed in main Whois info)
Important Information Requirements:
Name and Organization:
- First/Last names must have at least 4 characters
- Organization field needs minimum 4 characters (3 must be letters)
- Organization field optional for personal domains
Email Address Guidelines:
- Must be accessible for transfer notifications
- Avoid Apple email addresses (@mac.com, @me.com, @icloud.com)
- Use email not associated with the registered domain
- Remove any trailing spaces
Phone and Address Format:
- Enter phone numbers without dashes or country codes (example: 5559876543)
- Address line 1: Only street number and name
- Address line 2: Optional for apartment/unit numbers
- State field: Only for US and Canada
- Ensure correct postal code format
- Country selection must match phone number
Updating Contact Information:
- Access Domains dashboard
- Select domain and click "Edit" in Registration Information
- Update relevant contact fields
- Verify email accuracy
- Save changes
Verification Process:
- Changes to owner information require email verification
- Verification emails come from [email protected] or [email protected]
- Must verify within 15 days to prevent domain suspension
- Both old and new email addresses must approve changes
Privacy Protection:
- Whois protection enabled by default
- Some country-code domains (ccTLDs) may not allow Whois protection
- Can be manually disabled if needed
