Squarespace Domains: Guide to Renewal and Expiration Policies
Domain Renewal and Expiration at Squarespace
All Squarespace domains automatically renew to maintain your site's functionality. Renewal charges occur 15 days before the expiration date using your payment method on file.
Renewal Process:
- Billing occurs 15 days before expiration
- Email notifications sent to Owner and Administrator contacts
- Standard renewal fee is $20 per year
- Free first-year domains convert to paid ($20/year) after initial period
Grace Periods for Expired Domains:
- Squarespace Domains LLC: 60 days to reactivate
- Tucows: 30 days (45 days from billing date)
If Payment Fails:
- Domain enters "past due" status
- Remains active for 15 days
- Three payment attempts made every 5 days
- Domain expires if payment isn't received
- Website connection and email services stop working
To Maintain Active Domain:
- Keep payment information current
- Ensure auto-renewal is enabled
- Respond to renewal notifications
- Update billing information promptly if needed
Important Notes:
- Domain billing is separate from website and other subscriptions
- Multiple domains may share billing information
- Legacy domains (registered before March 5, 2015) have special renewal terms
- Third-party domains follow different renewal processes
To Prevent Expiration:
- Verify payment method is current
- Monitor email notifications
- Maintain active subscription
- Update contact information
- Keep auto-renewal enabled unless canceling
Legacy domains and special pricing remain at original rates unless specific changes occur (like switching to monthly billing or transferring to different sites).
