Dealing with SSL security warnings or certificate errors? Here's how to fix them:

Initial Wait Period

  • New domains need 72 hours to generate SSL certificates
  • This applies to both newly registered and recently connected domains

Common Error Messages

  1. "Your connection is not private/secure"
  2. "SSL Certificates Unavailable"

Quick Fixes:

  1. Wait 72 hours for new domains
  2. Verify SSL status in your site's SSL panel
  3. Check for mixed content
  4. Confirm correct domain linking

Domain Configuration Check:

  • For Squarespace Domains:
    • Verify original domain records are intact
  • For External Domains:
    • Confirm DNS records are entered correctly
    • Check CAA record restrictions
    • Ensure proper domain mapping

Browser Compatibility:

  • Use browsers listed on Let's Encrypt's "Platforms that trust ISRG Root X1"
  • Outdated or unsupported browsers may show security warnings

Additional Solutions:

  1. Use private browsing to test SSL certificate
  2. Clear browser cache
  3. Request Google Search Console to index secure version
  4. Consider transferring external domains to Squarespace

Important Notes:

  • SSL certificates are free for all correctly pointed domains
  • DNSSEC protection is automatic for Squarespace domains
  • Third-party DNSSEC may not always work with Squarespace SSL
  • Non-Squarespace domains need their own host's SSL support

After resolving issues:

  1. Verify secure site appears in search results
  2. Monitor for any recurring warnings
  3. Keep domain records updated
