How to Add and Remove Domain Nameserver Glue Records
Glue records enable you to host your domain on your own servers by registering your nameserver's IP address with your TLD registry. This is essential when you want to use custom nameservers instead of your domain provider's default ones.
When to Use Glue Records:
- You have your own server
- You're experienced with server administration
- You want to host your domain on a non-provider-managed server
Adding Glue Records:
- Gather your server's hostname and IP address
- Access your domain dashboard
- Navigate to DNS > nameserver registration
- Click "Add Host Record"
- Enter hostname and IP address
- Save changes (allow 24-72 hours for propagation)
Removing Glue Records:
- Ensure nameservers point to another destination first
- Access domain dashboard
- Go to DNS > Domain Nameservers
- Select Nameserver Registration
- Delete host record using trash can icon
- Save changes (allow 24-72 hours for propagation)
Important Notes:
- Cannot delete glue records while in use
- Removing records may cause 72-hour service interruption
- Contact your server provider if you need hostname/IP information
- After adding glue records, configure custom nameservers for your domain
Remember to always backup your DNS settings before making changes, as incorrect configuration can lead to website downtime.
