How to Set and Manage Primary Domain Names for Your Website
A primary domain establishes your main web address and helps build your brand identity. When you have multiple custom domains, visitors will always be redirected to your primary domain, regardless of which domain they use to access your site.
Setting Your Primary Domain
- The first custom domain you add automatically becomes your primary domain
- Open the Domains panel
- Click "..." next to the desired domain
- Select "Set as Primary Domain"
- Confirm by clicking "Set"
Important Considerations:
- For Squarespace domains: Verify ownership rights first
- For external domains: Ensure proper connection (may take up to 72 hours)
- Only one domain can be primary and applies to all pages
- Default .squarespace.com domains cannot be set as primary
Key Facts About Domain Management:
- Secondary domains use 301 redirects to the primary domain
- Search engines only display the primary custom domain
- Custom domains automatically hide your default .squarespace.com domain
- While logged in, you'll still see the default domain for security reasons
Common Questions:
- Adding additional custom domains doesn't automatically change your primary domain
- Subdomains can be primary only if hosted by third parties
- No need to remove primary status before setting a new primary domain
- Analytics combine traffic from all active domains
- Use Google Search Console to manage domain appearance in search results
If your default domain appears in search results after setting a custom primary domain, request new indexing through Search Console to update the listings.
