Primary domains are essential for building your brand identity and managing website traffic effectively. The primary domain serves as your site's main address, with all other custom domains redirecting to it.

Primary Domain Basics:

  • First custom domain added becomes primary automatically
  • All custom domains redirect to primary domain (301 redirect)
  • Primary domain displays in browser's address bar
  • Only one domain can be primary at a time

Setting a Primary Domain:

  1. Open Domains panel
  2. Click ... next to desired domain
  3. Select "Set as primary domain"
  4. Confirm by clicking "Set"

Important Requirements:

  • Squarespace domains must be verified
  • External domains need correct connection (up to 72 hours)
  • Custom domains only (built-in .squarespace.com domains can't be primary)
  • Applies to all pages on your site

Key Facts:

  • Built-in domains are hidden from visitors when custom domain is added
  • Built-in domains remain visible when logged in (security feature)
  • Search engines only display primary custom domain
  • Secondary domains automatically redirect with 301 redirect
  • Analytics combine traffic from all active domains

Limitations:

  • Can't use different domains for specific pages
  • Can't set Squarespace subdomains as primary
  • Can't track individual domain traffic in Analytics

If your domain appears incorrectly in search results, use Google Search Console to specify preferred domain and request reindexing.

For external domains showing in search results, submit a request through Google Search Console to update search listings.
