How to Test Orders and Refunds in Squarespace Commerce: Complete Guide

Store owners can test their checkout process using two methods:

  1. Place a Real Order and Refund (Recommended)
  • Works for credit/debit cards and PayPal
  • Place a real order as a customer
  • Immediately refund yourself through the Finance panel
  • Note: Processing fees may not be refundable

Fee considerations:

  • Squarespace Payments: Full refund except processing fee
  • PayPal: Full refund except fixed transaction fee
  • Stripe: Full refund except transaction fees
  1. Use Test Mode (Advanced)
  • Works only for Squarespace Payments/Stripe
  • Enable test mode in Settings
  • Use test card number: 4242 4242 4242 4242
  • Enter any future expiration date and CVC
  • Delete test orders when done
  • Disable test mode immediately after testing

Prerequisites:

  • At least one product or donation block
  • Shipping option set up (for physical products)
  • Connected payment processor
  • Public site with enabled checkout

Important Tips:

  • Test orders deplete inventory
  • Orders on non-live stores are always test orders
  • Test order numbers cannot be reset
  • Analytics count refunded orders
  • Cancel subscription test orders
  • Delete or hide test orders through the Orders panel

Gift Card Testing:

  1. Enable test mode
  2. Purchase gift card using test payment
  3. Use code to buy items
  4. Disable test mode when finished

If Customers Place Orders in Test Mode:

  1. Disable test mode
  2. Delete test order
  3. Restock inventory
  4. Contact customer for repurchase

Remember to disable test mode immediately after testing to prevent customers from accidentally placing test orders.
