Managing URLs and Static Resources in Squarespace: A Complete Guide
Every uploaded file on Squarespace is assigned a unique URL through our content delivery network (CDN). Here's how Squarespace handles different file types and their URLs.
Image URLs
- Images are stored in multiple sizes for optimal loading
- Each size version gets a unique static URL
- URLs improve site performance and page loading speed
- URLs typically start with images.squarespace-cdn.com or static.squarespace.com
- Format numbers in URLs indicate image width (e.g., format=1000w)
Video URLs
- Videos automatically convert to mp4 format
- Available in 1080p and 360p resolutions
- Optimized for cross-device compatibility
- Resolution selection cannot be manually adjusted
File URLs
- Static URLs are created for uploadd files
- Enable direct viewing or downloading
- Accessible through the link editor
Finding Static URLs
- Right-click image and open in new tab
- Check browser address bar for URL
- Use browser's view source option if needed
- Look for URLs starting with squarespace-cdn.com domains
Removing URLs
Images and Videos:
- Delete manually through resource library
- Unused resources auto-delete in 8-38 days
- Deleted Image blocks: 8 days for removal
- Deleted pages: 30 days in trash + 8 days for permanent deletion
Files:
- Remain in CDN temporarily after deletion
- Not visible on site but accessible via direct link
- Complete deletion takes 8-38 days
- Requires deletion of all file instances
- Empty site trash if page deleted
Expedited Deletion Requests:
- Email from site owner's address
- Include "Request to delete static URL"
- Provide domain name
- List static URLs to remove
- Separate multiple URLs with commas
Note: URL removal timing varies and cannot be expedited. Search engines may continue displaying URLs until re-indexing occurs.
