SEO URL Best Practices: A Guide to Managing Slugs and URLs
URL Slugs: How to Find and Edit Page URLs in Squarespace
A URL slug is the specific address of a page or collection item on your site. Squarespace automatically generates these based on page titles (example: "About Us" becomes /aboutus).
Finding URL Slugs
There are three ways to find a page's URL slug:
- Use Full Preview mode and check the address bar
- View the page in private/incognito browsing
- Check Page or Item Settings directly
URL Slug Formatting Rules
- Only lowercase letters allowed (uppercase automatically converts)
- Length: 3-250 characters (3-200 for blogs, events, and products)
- Only hyphens (-) allowed as special characters
- Cannot reuse product URL slugs after deletion
- Cannot match other active page URLs
Changing URL Slugs
To change a page URL:
- Open Pages panel
- Hover over page and click Settings
- Update URL Slug field
- Save changes

URL Structure for Different Content Types
Blog Posts:
- Include variables: %t (title), %m (month), %d (day), %y (year)
- Start with blog page URL
Products:
- Start with store page URL
- Use hyphens to separate words
- Cannot use deleted product URLs
Important Considerations
- Create 301 redirects after changing URLs to avoid broken links
- Update all internal links after URL changes
- Some URLs are reserved by Squarespace (e.g., /cart, /checkout)
- Collection page URLs become reserved URLs
- Changed URLs don't automatically redirect traffic
For specialized content like lessons, portfolio subpages, and video pages, access specific settings through their respective page panels to modify URLs while maintaining the parent page structure.
