A comprehensive guide to the DNS records needed when connecting third-party domains to Squarespace sites.

Required DNS Records

CNAME Records (2 required)

  1. Verification CNAME Record:
  • Host Name: [Your unique verification code]
  • Type: CNAME
  • Points to: verify.squarespace.com
  1. WWW CNAME Record:
  • Host Name: www
  • Type: CNAME
  • Points to: ext-cust.squarespace.com

A Records (4 required)

Point your root domain (@) to these IP addresses:

  • 198.185.159.144
  • 198.185.159.145
  • 198.49.23.144
  • 198.49.23.145

Note: If your provider only allows one A record, use 198.185.159.144.

Common Troubleshooting Steps

  1. DNS Record Access Issues:
  • Confirm your provider allows DNS record modifications
  • Check provider-specific connection guides
  • Contact your provider for DNS record assistance
  1. Connection Errors:
  • "Record not found" messages are normal initially
  • Allow up to 72 hours for DNS propagation
  • Verify correct record entry in your provider's DNS settings
  1. Alternative Options:
  • Consider domain transfer if eligible
  • Follow provider-specific guides for detailed steps
  • Contact provider support using our sample message

Remember that DNS changes can take up to 72 hours to propagate fully across the internet. During this time, your domain connection may appear incomplete or show errors.

For optimal results, double-check all record entries and ensure they match exactly as specified above. If issues persist after 72 hours, review your DNS settings or consider transferring your domain to Squarespace for simplified management.
