Images and uploaded files in Squarespace are stored in a Content Delivery Network (CDN) with unique static URLs for efficient retrieval and delivery.

File Storage and URLs

Images are stored in multiple sizes, each with a specific static URL to optimize page load times and improve SEO performance. Videos are automatically converted to .mp4 format, available in 1080p or 360p for universal device compatibility. Other files receive static URLs for direct viewing or downloading.

Finding Static URLs

To locate an image's static URL:

  • Right-click the image and open in a new tab
  • Check the browser's address bar
  • Look for URLs starting with images.squarespace-cdn.com, static.squarespace.com, or static1.squarespace.com
  • URLs end with format indicators (e.g., format=1000w for 1000-pixel versions)

Removing Files and URLs

Images and Videos:

  • Delete directly through Resource Library for immediate removal
  • Unused resources are automatically removed after 8-38 days
  • Deleted image blocks take 8 days to remove
  • Deleted pages remain in trash for 30 days, plus 8 days for permanent deletion

Files:

  • Remain in CDN temporarily after deletion
  • Complete removal requires:
    1. Deleting all instances from site
    2. Emptying site trash
    3. Waiting 8-38 days for system cleanup

Requesting Rapid Removal

For urgent removal, contact Squarespace support with:

  • Subject: "Request for Removal of Static URLs"

Note: Complete URL removal timing varies and may persist in search engines until re-indexing occurs.
